Taking on extra staff to cover the Olympics

Businesses across the UK are anticipating busy trading activity during the Olympics and it is expected that many will take on temporary staff to cope with increased demand. With that in mind, HMRC is reminding business owners to be extra cautious when employing temporary staff through labour agencies for any kind of work during seasonal and market demand.

Businesses operating in the leisure and construction sectors, including catering, food processing, hotels, security and builders, are being warned that they could inadvertently be hiring employees who are working illegally in the UK, or who are earning below the national minimum wage. Agencies who supply such temporary staff, known by HMRC as ‘gangmasters’, may also fail to pay the correct, if any, VAT, national insurance contributions and PAYE deductions. (more…)

A blatant bit of poaching

I’m wondering how you would react to this poaching email, addressed to one of our members of the team.  (A copy of all messages is kept in the AllEmail folder, accessible to all members of staff)

It read:

“My apologies for the email approach, but I have found from experience that this is usually preferable to an awkward conversation at your desk.

To the point – I am a freelance consultant currently retained by a Big 4 Firm looking to recruit a Part Qualified Accountant into their Reading Office, and I wondered if you would care to have a conversation one evening regarding this opportunity.? (more…)

Top 10 for setting up in the UK: 7. Finding key staff

You may already have found the first hire to implement your UK set-up. If done through a personal network, the person may be good, although his recommendation is necessarily subjective. If using a recruitment company, then their advice and reference checking would be useful, but unless on a retained basis, their main aim may be to get the person hired and get their fee. You may even be sending someone over to start the business, perhaps a UK national.
