Economic Indicators

UK

  • Year on year, overall production output in May 2010 was 2.6% higher than in May 2009
  • Total manufacturing output rose by 4.3% in May 2010 compared to the same month a year ago.
  • CPI annual inflation was 3.4% in May 2010, down from 3.7% in April.

LONDON

  • The percentage of the resident working age population who are unemployed and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in London was 4.2% in May 2010. There were 215,700 unemployment claimants in London in May 2010 compared with an upwardly revised 218,600 in April. There were 1,481,100 unemployment claimants in UK in May 2010 compared with a downwardly revised 1,512,000 in April.
  • London’s annual growth in output increased to –2.6% in Q4 2009 from -4.8% in Q3 2009. The rest of the UK’s annual growth in output increased to -2.9% in Q4 2009 from an upwardly revised -5.0% in Q3 2009.
  • London’s annual employment growth remained at –2.4 % in Q4 2009 (the figure for Q3 2009 has been revised down from -2.2% to -2.4%). The rest of the UK’s annual employment growth increased to -2.0% in Q4 2009 from an upwardly revised -2.4% in Q3 2009.

US

  • Real gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annual rate of 2.7% in the first quarter of 2010, following an increase of 5.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009.
  • The U.S. current account deficit increased to $109.0 billion, or 3.0% of GDP in the first quarter of 2010, up from $100.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009, or 2.8% of GDP.
  • U.S.-owned assets abroad increased $300.8 billion in the first quarter of 2010 after increasing $8.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009. Foreign-owned assets in the United States increased $332.1 billion in the first quarter of 2010 after increasing $103 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010.

NY

  • The unemployment rate fell to 9.8% in April 2010 from 10.0% in March. (Source: New York State Dept. of Labour)
  • The Manhattan hotel occupancy rate in April 2010 was 88.5 %, up from 85.9% in April 2009. (Source: New York State Dept. of Labour)
  • Private employment rose by 14,500 in April 2010, after an increase of 14,500 jobs in March. (Source: New York State Dept. of Labour)
