Economic Indicators

UK

  • GDP increased by 0.4% in the fourth quarter of 2009, revised up from 0.3% in the previous estimate. GDP in the fourth quarter of 2009 is now 3.1% lower than the fourth quarter of 2008. For the year 2009 as a whole, GDP contracted by 4.9%, compared with growth of 0.5% in the previous year.
  • CPI annual inflation was 3.0% in February 2010, down from 3.5% in January.
  • Year on year, overall production output in February 2010 was 0.1% lower than in February 2009.

LONDON

  • In the most recent 28-day period, (From 10 January 2010 to 6 February 2010) London’s Underground and buses had 255.7 million passenger journeys; 173.0 million by bus and 82.7 million by underground.
  • The moving average annual rate of growth in passenger journeys decreased to -0.6% from -0.8% in the previous period.
  • The percentage of the resident working age population who are unemployed and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in London was 4.4% in February 2010. There were 225,400 unemployment claimants in London in February 2010 compared with a downwardly revised 226,800 in January.

US  

  • Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 5.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009, 0.3 percentage points less than the second estimate. Real GDP rose 2.2% in the third quarter of 2009.
  • Real spending on travel and tourism decreased at an annual rate of 2.3% in 2009:4, following an increase of 6.6% (revised) in 2009:3. By comparison, real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 5.9% (second estimate) in 2009:4 after increasing 2.2% in 2009:3. Travel and tourism prices increased 7.0% in 2009:4 after increasing 6.1% (revised) in 2009:3.
  • The U.S. current-account deficit, increased to $115.6 billion (preliminary) in the fourth quarter of 2009 from $102.3 billion (revised) in the third quarter of 2009. As a share of U.S. GDP, the deficit increased to 3.2% from 2.9%. The previously published estimate of the current-account deficit for the third quarter was $108.0 billion.

  • Private employment rose by 27,300 in January 2010, after a loss of 14,200 jobs in December 2009. (Source: New York State Dept. of Labour)
